[EN] Seiko crystal repair in Belgium (or anywhere else in the EU)

Hi horlogeforum.nl experts - I have a Seiko 5M42-OE39 with damage to the faceplate “glass”. I believe you call it the crystal? I am not familiar with the terminology, so apologies if this does not sound right. Can this be repaired? I live in Belgium and was wondering if someone can recommend a repair service in Belgium or a mail-in repair service. I have heard stories of the official Seiko repair service being a rip-off, so looking for other avenues here. Thanks and apologies for my English language post.

It is a simple task for most Seiko dealers, the glas and a glass gasket can be ordered from Seiko, best is to combine it with replacing the capacitor too.
For a specialist, www.horlogeglas.nl, nowadays located in Sittard.

I suppose it’s decency, since this is a Dutch watch forum.

@toi_classified, beware that some seiko dealers don’t do their repairs themselves and ship the watch to… a seiko repair center :yum:

Or their own watchmaker. Charging you some extra for their service and shipping costs.

So perhaps some members can recommend you dealers or watchmakers who can help you for a reasonable price.

Thanks a lot everyone! So it looks like my best bet is to just go to a seiko dealer and pony up the cash they ask? Let me call a few and find out how much they charge. Any ideas on how much this will cost? 50-100 euros I am guessing?

Thanks! Will report back on what I find.

Many jewellers send their watches to Richard, www.horlogeglas.nl, he is psecialized in Seiko but does everything else too.

I went to a local jeweler here (Seiko dealership) in Brussels and they said it would cost 80-90 euros and it would take 7 weeks. That is a really long turnaround time. I am going to contact Richard now.

Just asked over at SCWF forums and they recommended that I purchase the sapphire crystal (listed on ebay as item
221893261962) and have it installed. I paid about 37 GBP (including shipping to Belgium). Now the challenge is to find a decent watchmaker here in Brussels who can install the crystal.

Thanks! I work in Antwerp, so perhaps I can check at a few watchmakers there to see if they can install the crystal. I am learning a lot here. BTW, turns out the ‘standard’ crystal that the seiko dealership/manufacturer installs is apparently inferior to this sapphire crystal I just purchased. So looks like I am coming out a bit ahead in terms of price/quality ratio by ordering the crystal myself and getting it installed.

It gets even more interesting. The Seiko service is indeed a complete rip-off. My local Seiko dealer said the sapphire crystal option is 140 Euros (this price includes the crystal, installation, postage etc.). Wait time is 6-7 weeks. The same dealer said it would cost me 15 euros to replace the crystal if I brought my own crystal. However he needs to send it somewhere and the wait time is two weeks. I’m glad I went about buying the crystal myself.
