"2013-02-27: OWC Newsletter – Case Sample Great – Next step Final Sample
http://www.homageforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=33&t=18009&p=221699#p221699
Please see the photos above. All I can say is Daz (my Master Watchmaker) and I are very happy.
Overall the case is as per my last Newsletter. This release is the same but different from the last, it has water resistance to 300m, it tells the time, but it is essentially a better mouse trap.
The case is as close to the compressor principle as I can get. When pressure is applied the crystal and the case back move and compress the O-rings more and make it more waterproof – this is not possible with a screwed back as the threads impede the case back movement. Hence the case back is secured with 6 screws and the crystal is held in place with a retaining ring. So the crystal cannot blow off. Even “real” Super Compressor cases rarely have both crystal and case back moving.
The movement ring has been incorporated into the case. This involved more machining, but allows for more secure movement anchoring. The rehaut (sight ring) is removable, providing future flexibility and easier assembly.
The bracelet is 33% thicker at 4mm thick and all the links are removable. The SEL is secured with a screw bar not spring bars. This makes changing bracelets/bands easier and is more robust than spring bars. I have chosen a butterfly clasp and will be including a NATO with the package. I know I cannot please all/some/any of the people all the time, but being a small maker I chose the more robust and elegant solution available.
Crystal is 4.5mm thick, but the case only increases 0.2mm to 13.0mm in thickness. Case sides are slightly pillowed not flat, making the case look a little more elegant. It is 51mm from lug to lug (the extra length needed for the screw bars).
Uni-directional bezel has 60 clicks and is 1.0mm larger (41.5mm) to accommodate the 4 screws that allow fine adjustments and easier bezel removal and replacement. I chose less clicks (less is more), as this makes the teeth more robust and larger (than the smaller teeth on 120 click bezels).
Pendant (stem tube) and Crown are new. The pendant is screwed into the case and has small knurling’s inside to accept the insertion tool. This knurling was chosen as it gives the most grip in such a small part without damage. Crown is traditional multi-O-ring-type about 7.0mm.
As you would imagine with all these modifications, the watch puts on some weight. With its full complement of links etc. it is about 215grams, (compared to the last release of 160grams). I have slender 170mm wrists and the watch wears very well.
Dials are the same as last release (no date). But I have added a Blue-Date and a Black-Date to the Snowflake line. The Sword line also gets a date, new hands, raw C3 lumen and a 24 hour track.
This release will start a little higher up the movement tree with the ST-1812 (2892-A2-type) as I have dropped the ST-2130 (2824-2-type) and the flagship remains the Soprod A-10. I have been very satisfied with the Sea-Gull movements and I have been wearing 24/7 a ST-1812 for about 3 years and been very happy.
A German-made Milanese mesh bracelet remains an option, but this time slightly thicker at 3.2mm with micro adjustments. I actually managed to get it to fit my “slender” wrists.
As Porsche says, it is different but the same. Time wise, the case maker and my Master Watch Maker take as long as they take. But I am hoping to start shipping product by Q3 2013.
I am currently discussing some minor changes (like unifying the screw size and case back engraving). So we should be on track for deliveries later in the year. Please remember the clock starts ticking when I pay the case maker.
Also waiting for firm pricing from Sea-Gull. Then I can set the price.
Surprisingly the case maker has said that this case is not the final sample. The next step is the “technical sample”. So we get another sample. This is great… initial sample then “technical sample”. All I can say is I am staggered by their attention to detail.
I am sorry to say there is still a little way off…. But it is worth it. This case maker is as fastidious as the Germans without the attitude. I have one of my real Swiss Watch Company contacts for this lead……"
Groeten,
Stefan
