Je hebt gelijk. Maar gisteravond was er even de drang om het nieuws bekend te maken, voorzien van twee eenvoudige shots. Ik moet alleen wel zeggen dat ik geen enkele foto of video ben tegengekomen die dit horloge gezien in werkelijkheid recht doet. Dus ik heb ook niet de illusie dat dat bij mij wel het geval gaat zijn. Wat vooral opvalt is de lengte van de wijzers. Met name de secondenwijzer is echt ellenlang. Ook door het balansstuk aan de achterkant.
Als ik één minpuntje aan zou mogen geven dan is dat dat de kroon wat kleiner is dan ik idealiter had gewild. De kroon van de SBGW231 heeft een heerlijk formaat, die geeft het ultieme opwindgevoel. Dit is hetzelfde uurwerk, maar door de kleinere kroon is het ‘kroongevoel’ iets minder.
Ik zie dat ze mooi des GS zijn, ja. De wijzerlengte van hun dress pieces is sowieso wat me in GS aantrekt. Da’s tranentrekkend goed van proportie altijd.
Is dat omwille van “period correct” gedaan of zo? Ik weet weinig van dit model, dus ik weet ook niet of het een back-catalog her-uitgave is.
Ik vermoed dat de kroon inderdaad een bepaalde period-correctness heeft. Deze SBGW253 was een heruitgave van de eerste Grand Seiko uit 1960 (vandaar ook in 1960 stuks), maar dan wel opgeschaald naar 38mm.
Mooi gezegd: “These watches are as much about what isn’t there as what is.”
Eigenlijk vind ik “reissue” dit horloge tekort doen. Het is zo’n totaalinterpretatie met balans tussen de onderdelen dat je het door het een reissue te noemen tekort doet.
Hodinkee zegt het mooi in de teksten vind ik:
The steel model is identical in size and technical characteristics to the gold model. One distinguishing trait is its blued-steel seconds hand; like many Grand Seiko watches, it impressed us as a wonderful example of how good a watch can look with just a few simple elements, but all done with real care and attention to detail. You really notice the elegance of the faceted lugs on this one and though it’s not as overtly luxurious as the gold model, it is perhaps an even better platform for showing off, without distraction, what makes Grand Seiko what it is.
It’s hard to imagine a more genuinely luxurious simple watch, and SBGW253 is a delight to handle and wear. You look at it and if you’re someone who has been into watches for a while, it reminds you of why you got interested in mechanical watches in the first place. Sure, it’s an industrially made watch, but the extra investment in fit and finish is so obvious that it really becomes difficult to think of another time-only, three-handed watch that even comes close to being competitive.
