Movement:
The movement is the basic ST1901 variant of the ST19 movement series - it’s basically the original Venus 175 (not a clone or copy), because Seagull has bought the original tooling in the early 196ties from Venus. The tooling was used to produce the original batch of chronographs in the 196ties and then put “on ice”. Nearly all parts (bridges, plates, levers, gears) except the oscillating system are directly interchangeable with a vintage Venus 175.
At the time the chronograph production was recommenced, Seagull did 2 modifcations to the movement:
adding an Incabloc-style shock absorber (jewel count is actually 20 now)
increasing the beat from 18,000bph to 21,600bph for accuracy reasons
Factory acceptance standards for the movement:
Accuracy: -15 to +30 sec/day
Power reserve: 40 (-10%) hours
The movement has the potential of higher accuracy and higher power reserve, if Seagull would switch from mass production to a little more selection, or careful lubrication to avoid excess friction. The “1963” watches I had in stock now did all have a power reserve of 48+ hours, accuray range was from -5 to +20 sec/day.
Some extreme macro shots of the movement are here:
Apart from the basic ST1901 variant the movement comes in several variants ST190X with more or less useful complications added (24h indicator at 6, or power reserve indicator, or date and moon phase).
