I am a watch enthusiast that finally can have the chance of entering this amazing world, but I am still missing a lot of knowledge. Sorry for speaking in English, but mijn Nederlands is een klein beetje verschrijkkelijk.
My question is: when you find an interesting watch, what factors do you consider to establish if its value? I guess new vs used, box and papers, damage, caliber… what else?
What do you look for and where can you see a real market value of the watch?
Welcome! Research on the seller is also important and should not be overlooked… You already kind of mentioned all of the other things I look for when buying a watch. In the world of watches, value is often derived from craftsmanship but also A LOT of branding / marketing. You can find an indication of the value on Chrono24 and at other dealer websites of course. Normally there are enough reference points to compare the watch you want to buy to.
Ps. Service history when buying a used watch, could save you hundreds of euros
Hi, welcome on the watch forum!
That market value is mostly determined by the market. So less sought after mostly means a lower price. And vice versa.
And some watched devalue faster after the initial purchase. A Breitling that costs €5000 new, can be valued at €3500 when you walk out the door.
But a Rolex Pepsi bought new for €8600 is worth €14000 when you walk out the door of the authorized dealer.
I’m surprised by how great google chrome is with the automatic google translate. I really can’t tell the original version is in Dutch. Also, I know a bit so it’ll help with the much needed nederlands training!
At some point I would indeed like to have a collection that doesn’t suppose a loss of money, of course. But, as of now, I’m basically looking to build a collection that is going to make financial sense. I am not wealthy by any means, so if I can avoid losing money on depreciation or repairs unnecessarily everything is more than appreciated!
Buy rolex new or everything else second hand.
Than someone else will have lost the money on it already.
Personally I dont focus too much on money if I want a watch, I’ll get it. Im in it for looks. Condition and originality are therefore very important to me (I like vintage…).
Box, papers, caliber… I couldn’t care less.
I’d rather just have the great looking watch without anything, than a good watch with box and papers.
Welcome to the ‘green’ part of the forum!
Rolex is the easiest choice in the financial situation mentoined above. There are some models from other brands that do reasonably well in keeping their value. For example Tudor Black Bays and the Omega Speedmaster models.
Brand is the single most important factor for the value of a watch. But aside from that, the best way to determine the value of a watch is check it against similar sold examples from private sellers from the same region. So look on the forums, ebay sold listings etc. Do not look at dealer prices on chrono24.
